Oklahoma Does Something Cool

"We have an official state folk song and a state country song. With as many outstanding rock artists as we have in Oklahoma, it was time to recognize this music as well," said State Senator Mike Schulz, according to The Associated Press.

More than 21,000 votes were cast online for a list of 10 songs selected by a panel of experts, according to the AP. The winner was announced Monday in the Oklahoma Senate." - MTV.com

And the winner was.... "Do You Realize?" by The Flaming Lips. That's what happens when you open voting to all those kids on the interwebs, though it's pretty cool nonetheless.

I don't know who I'd pick for Maryland - perusing the list of Maryland music people on Wikipedia leaves the best choice as David Byrne of the Talking Heads or Frank Zappa, with Beach House coming in behind them. (Boy are there a lot of punk bands from here.) Maybe the list is missing someone else, but I'm not in any position to say who.

As somebody who lived in and still has a lot of family living in Oklahoma, I was always amazed the The Flaming Lips hailed from that state. They are the least likely band to come from Oklahoma is history...
